I have a Datejust II that when tightened the crown is almost upright (about 15 degrees to the right) and most frustratingly i have a 116610LN SUBc that has an almost completely upside down crown when closed. The Sky-Dweller is probably the most deceptively complex watch to have been released by Rolex in recent years; it contains a cleverly integrated annual calendar and a second timezone indicator, all operated by the single crown via the clutch-like bezel.

The only Rolex where the crown is supposed to be upright is the Sky-Dweller. Every other watch, it's whatever. Some people have theorized that they'll add the SkyD's upright-crown technology to other models, but personally it's.really never bothered me. I don't believe when you screw the crown down, that it's supposed to have any particular alignment, but when mine is screwed down just right, the Rolex crown is upside down. I took this picture with a Canon 5D MkIII and a 100mm macro lens. IIRC only the higher end models (precious metals) have the patented crown assembly that allows the crown to remain upright. On your Explorer it's just luck of the draw, and will change over time as the seals are compressed. The crown in the rehaut is perfectly centered on my new Exp II. That was something that I checked with a loupe when I picked it up at the AD. I'm pretty sure it's the same with my 41mm Sub.
