Rolex pendulums run on ball bearings (or they did) and these bearings either wear away the race they run in or the race becomes damaged due to watch falls, causing the pendulum to acquire lateral/horizontal movement and this causes said rattling and scraping. Rolex Forums - Rolex Forum > Rolex & Tudor Watch Topics > Rolex General Discussion: Loud grinding sound with vibration when shaking Rolex gently For a while now when I shake it even slightly I can hear a noise and feel a vibration/humming which is clearly the rotor spinning round. The rotor works because I don't need to wind it. The watch also works as normal and keeps good time perhaps gaining 2 seconds a day, and also winds smoothly. However, lately whenever I shake it there is a strong vibration that reverberates within the entire watch, the best way to describe it is a "sproing" feeling like a large spring is loose inside. I never had this sensation before, but the thing is that it keeps darn near perfect time, so nothing seems wrong otherwise. Those who say their rolex is stone cold silent when shaken, and those who say a light click click noise is normal when rolling the watch on the wrist (in a quiet environment). My brand new (20 day old) sub 114060 makes a a quiet click sound when rolled on the wrist.
This spinning vibration is now worse as i can 'spin' it with just a light shake of the watch in my hand. It stopped once last nite even though i was wearing it the whole day. Can anyone tell me what went wrong? I have multiple rolex reps, and none of them "rattle". If anything, the rotor moves, but a lower quality movement will not have a well oiled rotor and could be facing problems such as knocking or could just not be screwed well into place and hitting the case.

Normally, Rolex watches won’t make any audible sound when you shake them, but it can vary depending on the model. For example, the cheaper Rolex watches or the older Rolex Watches might make some noise when your shake them hard enough, but it’s due to the moving parts in the watch.
