The 24-hour hand is on the Explorer II to indicate whether it’s day or night, or more technically, whether it’s 12:00 am versus 12:00 pm. So, it’s unlike the hour hand, which travels across the dial twice a day, from 12 am to 11:59 am, then again from 12:00 pm until 11:59 pm. Source: Bob’s Watches.Instead of featuring the 'fat' arrow, the 24-hour hand was elongated, thinned out, and colored red. Additionally, as it was now independently adjustable from the regular time-telling hands, the Rolex Explorer II's 24-hour hand became a GMT-hand and could display a second timezone.
In addition to conventional hour, minute and seconds hands, the GMT-Master II features an arrow-tipped hand, which circles the dial once every 24 hours, as well as a bidirectional rotatable 24-hour graduated bezel.
